Blog Assignment # 1

My name is Angel.  I am a junior at New Jersey University and I'm pursuing a BFA in photography. I became passionate about photography in my senior year of high school. That same year I figured out that I wanted to be a fashion photographer and so far it’s been pretty cool. With photography, I got to meet new people and have some awesome experiences such as shooting at New York Fashion Week and getting into concerts for free. Besides photography, I have other passions, such as DJing. At a young age, I fell in love with electronic music and I taught myself how to make my mixes since I was way too young to attend any show. The second I turned 21 this year, I took advantage and attended many raves and shows. My inner child was excited. The best part is that I was able to get into a few shows for free and go in as a photographer. A third passion of mine is running. My brother and I ran track and cross country back in high school. I wasn’t the best runner but I’ve improved a lot since high school. Currently, I’m training on my own and I compete at local 5k races. My most recent race was back in December and it was the most fun one yet, although it was raining and cold.

When it comes to literacy, I've struggled a bit when I was younger. For starters, Spanish was my first language. My parents barely knew any English at the time, so Spanish was always around in my household. When I was in first grade, I found it really difficult to read and write in English, Spanish was all I knew. Also being a bit of a slower learner and dealing with stuttering, just made literacy for me not a pleasant time. This led me to fail the first grade. After that, my mum would make me practice my reading, but little me was stubborn and didn't want to do that. After doing first grade again and continuing with elementary school, I got better with reading but it was not my go-to activity outside of school. That changed by when I was a senior in high school. I started to read books voluntarily, and I found that surprising, since my entire life I've believed that I did not enjoy reading. I concluded that the reason I did not enjoy reading was that I genuinely did not have any interests in the reading I had to complete for school. As of right now, self-help books have been my favorite genre to read.  A few books that I've read are "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" by Mark Manson, "You Are a Badass" by Jen Sincero, and my current read is "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. The only reading I enjoyed in high school was Shakespeare. But besides self-help books are Awesome. I've learned a lot from these authors and I have more books than I want to read in the future. My thoughts on reading have changed compared to when I was younger and it's something that I will continue doing.
